In 1999, a community-based initiative led by the Friends of the High Line sought to transform the derelict tracks into a public park. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron were commissioned to convert the industrial site into a modern art museum. Completed in 2000, the Tate Modern retains much of the original structure’s industrial character, including the massive turbine hall, while introducing contemporary elements that complement its new function. The district, originally the Gooderham and Worts Distillery, was founded in 1832 and became the largest distillery in the world by the late 19th century. After ceasing operations in 1990, the site fell into disrepair. In 2001, Cityscape Holdings Inc. and Dream Unlimited Corp. began redeveloping the area, preserving its Victorian industrial architecture while introducing residential, commercial, and cultural spaces. The Distillery District, opened in 2003, is now a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood, attracting locals and tourists alike.
